Altcoins against Bitcoin: how many coins are in an uptrend in Bitcoin terms

People call a stretch when most altcoins gain more than Bitcoin an “altcoin season”. This page shows two measured readings of it, each with its date: how many of the largest coins beat Bitcoin over the last 90 days, and how many coins are in an uptrend when their price is measured in Bitcoin. Neither says what comes next.

As of 10 Oct 2026, 20:20 UTC

Reading A: the altcoin season index

9 Oct 2026: 58% of the 50 largest coins beat Bitcoin over the last 90 days, and 65% of the 100 largest.

58top 50, 50 coins counted65top 100, 100 coins counted

The percent of the 50 largest coins of each day, without Bitcoin, stablecoins, wrapped tokens and funds, whose price rose more than Bitcoin's over the last 90 days. The second line counts the 100 largest the same way. Below 25 is often called Bitcoin season, above 75 altcoin season. It is not part of any trend score.

Since 30 Dec 2025 the top-50 reading has run from 24 (30 Dec 2025) to 68 (25 Sep 2026). It was above 75 on 0 days and below 25 on 9 days of 282 days. Each reading is dated by the day whose close it describes; the history starts 90 days after the first daily snapshot.

The widely known Altcoin Season Index by Blockchaincenter also looks at the 50 largest coins over 90 days and calls it altcoin season when 75% of them did better than Bitcoin. This reading is MarketRender's own count from CoinGecko's daily snapshots, with its own list of coins left out, so the two can differ.

Reading B: trends in Bitcoin terms

In Bitcoin terms means the coin's price measured in Bitcoin instead of in US dollars, so its trend says whether the coin has been gaining or losing against Bitcoin. On the weekly candle ending 4 Oct 2026, 143 of 253 coins (57%) were bullish in Bitcoin terms.

Weekly candles, the whole record

From the week ending 9 Sep 2018, the first one counted over at least 10 coins, to the week ending 4 Oct 2026; 10 to 253 coins a week. It ran from 0% (29 Sep 2019) to 88% (16 May 2021).

Daily candles, the last 2 years

From 10 Oct 2024 to 9 Oct 2026; 169 to 270 coins a day. It ran from 3% (4 Nov 2024) to 96% (22 Jul 2025).

The coins counted on a past candle are the coins the site scores or has scored since, with their history worked out backwards, so the early years lean on coins that are still large today and rest on fewer of them.

143 coins are bullish in Bitcoin terms on the weekly candle

Since: the last day of the week whose close flipped the coin's weekly trend in Bitcoin terms to bullish; a coin shown "since the start of its record" has been bullish in Bitcoin terms since before its first stored weekly flip. Change: the coin's price in Bitcoin from that close to the latest closed weekly candle, green when it rose against Bitcoin and red when it fell. Largest coins first.

How to read this

  • Both readings describe what has happened up to the date beside them. Neither is a forecast, and neither is part of any trend score on the site.
  • Reading A compares price changes over a fixed 90 days. Reading B follows each coin's trend line in Bitcoin terms, which turns only when a candle closes on its other side, so the two can disagree.
  • Slower candles turn less often, so the weekly and monthly shares change more slowly than the 4-hour and daily ones.
  • A coin is counted once it has enough history for its trend line to settle; new coins are not counted until then.
